Weatherman User Guide

Learn the core workflow, map controls, and reporting tools that power Weatherman's forensic hail verification.

rocket_launch Quick Start

Verify a storm

Pick a date, find a location, and inspect calibrated hail size with confidence scores.

Export evidence

Create a hail verification report or share a map snapshot directly from macOS.

route Core workflow

  1. Choose a date and time. Use the day controls to load MRMS and satellite data for a specific event.
  2. Find a location. Search an address or enable location services to center the map.
  3. Review calibrated hail size. Weatherman applies per-storm calibration and physical validation to estimate surface hail size.
  4. Check confidence and uncertainty. Confidence labels and bounds explain how reliable the estimate is for the selected location.
  5. Export your report. Generate a hail verification report or share an annotated map image.

gamepad Map controls

  • swipe Pan and zoom with your trackpad or mouse to inspect storm contours.
  • format_list_bulleted Use the legend to interpret hail size categories and intensity bands.
  • side_navigation Toggle the sidebar to focus on map details or metadata.
  • arrow_back Switch days with the previous and next buttons to step through an event.
  • my_location Use the location button to follow your current position on the map.

analytics Understanding the output

  • straighten Calibrated hail size combines MESH with ground truth bias correction.
  • verified Confidence labels reflect calibration agreement, thresholds, and false alarm penalties.
  • error_outline Uncertainty bounds show a realistic range around each hail size estimate.

share Reports and sharing

  • ios_share Use the share button to export a static map image or verification report.
  • summarize Reports include date, location, calibrated size, confidence score, and uncertainty bounds.
  • screenshot_monitor Include screenshots of key layers to support damage assessment workflows.
